Philosophy

Commercial contracts and insurance policies tend to receive segregated attention. The result? A clunky patchwork of assurances that rarely react as intended. Let's change that.

The risklegal approach aims to harmonize your organization's goals, risk appetite, insurance, and contracts, towards an intentional and forward-looking risk management strategy. If a claim or dispute arises, you have counsel in your corner to enforce your position in a manner aligned with that strategy.

In practice, here's what that means:

Edmonton

1. Relationships > Transactions

One-off engagements are great, but our value is best demonstrated in long-term partnerships that grow over time.

2. Pragmatism is paramount (no 'bulldogs' here)

We take your reputation, resources, and time seriously; sometimes the best dispute is the one you didn't litigate. Maintaining credibility with counterparties, insurers, and the courts, requires appreciating the limits of your position as much as the strengths.

3. Focused > Full service

When the stakes are high, count on specialized expertise.

4. Curiosity is a good thing

Clients should always feel like they can reach out, particularly if there's an opportunity to avoid an issue. The education and fractional+subscription services exist so you can learn about our business as much as we can learn about yours.

5. Clarity and brevity

As complex as contracts and insurance can be, every client should be able to understand the reasons for our advice. We also promise to spare you the long-winded explanations.

Amjad Khadhair, J.D.

Amjad thrives on complex problems. He’s built his practice most recently at PCL Construction advising on insurance and contract law matters for construction and energy projects across Canada, the U.S., and Australia. His experience spans the lifecycle of risk management: From insurance placements and contract wordings, to shepherding a captive, and managing hundreds of incidents as they unfold including serious injuries, design errors, construction defect claims, and cyber attacks.

Amjad leverages his understanding of the commercial realities of insurance as much as legal principles and brings a pragmatic, relationship-driven, approach to his work. This has enabled him to recover more than $45M+ in disputed insurable losses/payments in recent years.

Amjad started his career as a litigator acting for public and private organizations, including insurers. He was co-counsel on one of the leading civil decisions in Alberta on police use of force.

Amjad is frequently relied on by other lawyers and brokers for advice on complex insurance strategy, and has presented on legal issues in construction and risk management in 15 cities across North America.

"I started risklegal because of my earliest impressions as an in-house lawyer: There is limited legal expertise in Canada for commercial policyholders, particularly in niche areas like construction. And if large companies aren't spared dubious positions by insurers from time to time, I see a broader unmet need."
